Amazing Spider-Man 545
|
In the stupidest possible story ever written about Spidey, Marvel says "screw you" to all of their fans.
Peter and MJ take Mephisto's deal and undo their marriage.
It's the stupidest thing I have ever read. Who would give up the love of their life to make a deal with the devil to save someone who has been on the brink of death for the last 40 years? Stupid, stupid, stupid.
As a special bonus, the art is also terrible.
I'm a big fan of JMS, but this is the dumbest plot --- EVER.
It's a stupid move to try to make Spidey fun again. Joe Q thinks that he isn't fun now because he is married. They totally missed the mark. Spidey was fun because we IDENTIFIED with him. We identified with him when he couldn't pay the bills or didn't get the girl. We don't identify with someone who makes a deal with the devil to get the girl out of his life. It's stupid and idiotic.
This is the last Spidey comic we will review on the site until a time may come when they rectify this. I have over 30 years of Spidey comics and am not going to throw them out just because the current idiots at Marvel have stupid ideas. As far as I am concerned, Spidey died 12/28/07.

The New Avengers #37
|
It's the New Avengers vs. the Hood and his gang of losers. This comic is unreadable due to the terrible art. It's too bad too because Bendis does a great job of telling a great story.
Meanwhile the paranoia is growing about who is a Skrull and who isn't. I'll tell you who I think is a Skrull... Peter Parker. Yep. They aren't going to undo Spidey's marriage in "One More Day" by a deal with Mephisto... they are going to undo it by saying that Parker has been a Skrull for the last 20 years. Think about it... Peter has been acting so out of character lately. They are setting us up. Write this down "Peter Parker is a Skrull".
Anyway... skip this book. The art is terrible. It looks like it was drawn in an hour. Yu has a lot of trouble with smaller images of heroes. They look silly, rough and rushed. I'm going to put this book back on the shelf until they get a new artist.

Warbound #1
|
The Warbound is a ragtag group of aliens that bound themselves to the Hulk during Planet Hulk. Currently they consist of Korg, Ellow Kaifi, Hiroim and a Brood alien. Interested? Well you should be.
Planet Hulk and the following World War Hulk were the best comics of 2007. The Hulk was finally cool. In those series, master writer Greg Pak created a cool supporting cast of characters called known as the Warbound.
The art is good quality and the story is what I've come to expect from Pak. There's a main story and a backup story staring Meik - the traitor of the Warbound.
My only complaint... it's a limited series. Does this mean that the Warbound will meet and end and the end of the series? We'll find out in 4 more months.

World War Hulk #4
|
All hail the Green King!
Planet Hulk and then World War Hulk have been the greatest events in comics in a long time. I enjoyed both of them far more than Civil War or any of DC's Crisis series. Greg Pak should be winning all sorts of awards for his writing. The Hulk is finally cool!
The Hulk has conquered Manhattan. Dr. Strange is channeling some supernatural powers to combat the Hulk, but that doesn't last long. The Hulk makes quick work of Dr. Strange and soon the heroes find themselves in the Hulk's arena. Iron Man, Mr. Fantastic, Black Bolt and Dr. Strange are forced to fight each other. As the comic ends, it looks like the Sentry is the only thing that can stop the Hulk.
My guess will be that no one will stop the Hulk - that he will just become tired of things and walk away. It might be a bit anti-climatic, but I would guess that is what will happen since there is only one issue left.
Romita's art, as always, is excellent. My only complaint is the silly "magic hands" that Dr. Strange has when he combats the Hulk. They look like maces... it is weird. Other than that, everything about this book is great fun.
If you haven't checked out WWH... stop what you are doing and go get it.

Captain America #30
|
Whoops. Looks like Captain America woulda been a daddy if he hadn't been capped (pun intended).
Winter Soldier goes up against Crossbones and Sin and takes them to the cleaners. However, he is disabled when the Red Skull uses a pre-programmed shut down code on him. Meanwhile, Sharon Carter, still programmed, apparently takes out the Falcon and the Black Widow. The question still lingers out there... who will pick up the shield and become the new captain? Winter Solder? Hawkeye? Stark?
Ed Brubaker continues his very solid and exciting run on this title. The art was ok, but nothing spectacular.
The comic was over all too soon. The last 5 issues of Cap would probably make a very good trade.

ASM #544 - One More Day
|
Well, here it is... Marvel's big Spidey event "One More Day".
I have to say, that I am not really looking forward to this. With the Marvel boards abuzz with talk of undoing Spidey's marriage by changing the time-line or some other gimmick to make Peter single again, I am groaning. Every time they try to "fix" Spidey, they ruin him and irritate long term fans like me. That being said, since I have every ASM comic for the last 30 years, I'm giving this a try...
...and I have to say "ho-hum" so far. Since Marvel promoted the heck out of this comic, there were probably 3 pages that I hadn't already seen. Everything with ASM lately seems so dragged out (like the 5th season of B5 - JMS might have gotten to the finish line a little too early).
The highlight of the series so far is the fantastic alternate cover by Marko Djurdjevic. That is a fantastic cover. I have to say Quesada's cover and interior art is sub-par. Sorry... it just is. There's a picture of Pete on the bottom left of page 6 that is so terrible I can't believe it got printed. What's the deal with the cheecks Pete???? Quesada's cover for issue 2 looks even worse.
The fight between Spidey & Iron Man was cool enough and the art improved there.
All I can say, is don't drag this out. Tell the story you want to tell and don't drag it out.

Silver Surfer Requiem #4
|
OK, so it has been a while since I have reviewed any comics... so now I have to catch up.
With the exception of issue #3, Silver Surfer Requiem has been a fantastic comic series. This issue shows the end of the Silver Surfer, but is not the heroic end that we would all expect. No showdown with Thanos, Mephisto, or anyone else, no the Surfer's end comes about when his silver skin deteriorates.
I still just don't understand why Galactus can't fix him. Oh well.
The art is great and JMS's writing is at its best. This is a great series and I highly recommend it.

World War Hulk #2
|
World War Hulk is fantastic! I can't get enough. Hulk is back, madder and stronger than ever and has his warbound troop with him as well. One by one, the Hulk is taking on the Marvel Universe. Will anything stand?
First, the art is spectacular. JR JR is one of the best artists out there. Period.
Second, the story is great. The Hulk gives She-Hulk the smack down and then takes down Ares and the rest of the Avengers. Finally at the end, there is a mega battle between Hulk and the Thing. Every panel is fantastic.
If you haven't read this... are you really a comic fan?

Silver Surfer: Requiem #2
|
Silver Surfer Requiem is a fantastic miniseries. JMS (J. Michael Straczynski of Babylon 5 fame) continues to knock this out of the park. The Silver Surfer is dying. In issue #1, he came to Earth to visit the Fantastic Four. In issue #2, he runs into the Amazing Spider-Man.
JMS is always very good at dialog. The exchanges between Spidey & the Silver Surfer are very good. The surfer is distant and Spidey cracks good jokes.
The book is out of continuity since Spidey is in the classic red & blue costume, but unlike the recent Spider-Man Reign series, this doesn't appear to be set too far in the future. There is a pretty chilling monologue on the last page of the issue. I won't ruin it, but it sounds like the end for the Surfer.
The art is also very beautiful. My only complaint is that Spidey's eyes are black. Why change that? It seems odd. Other than that, the art is just fantastic.
If you are a Silver Surfer fan (and who isn't?), then you need to pick up this series.

X-Men #200
|
This comic is a mess. There's no other way to put it. Humberto Ramos' art is so distracting that I could barely finish the comic. Eyes are way to big, necks are too long, noses are pointy... just... yuck. Everything is totally disproportioned.
Maybe I missed something, but weren't Gambit and Sunfire with Apocalypse? I did dig the new look that Sunfire had.
Since this is the first chapter of Endangered Species, it's probably worth picking up. Since this was a big deal for Marvel they, of course, had 3 covers. There's a surprise at the end, but I lost interest well before that. It's a shame. I've been a X-Men fan for over 30 years so I *wanted* to like it this... but I just couldn't take it. Pick this one up only if you are a die-hard X-Men fan.
